Cuckfield remembers animals sent to war never to return

Cuckfield will mark International War Animal Day on February 24, an event to remember the tens of millions of animals who lost their lives in war.

A specially designed flag will fly over the Queen’s Hall and post boxes in the village will have knitted toppers depicting horses and dogs set against purple poppies. Pin badges, wristbands and knitted poppies will be available to buy from the Corner Cafe, jojo’s boutique on the High Street, and Cuckfield Pet and Country Store on Staplefield Road.

Susan Osborne,  who lives in the village and is co-founder of The Animal Purple Poppy Fund which organises the UK arm of the Day, said: “We have joined forces with other animal charities and organisations in Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada and France to set aside February 24 each year as a focus to remember the sacrifice of  horses, mules, donkeys, dogs, cats, pigeons and camels who served alongside the armed forces in two world wars and other conflicts.

“It’s not known  exactly how many animals were sent into battle but we do know it numbers in the tens of millions. The Animal Purple Poppy Fund raises money in their name to help animal sanctuaries and charities in need today. As a village of animal lovers I do hope their will be a show of support.”
