Day One

After a day in which government-appointed inspector, Joanna Gilbert, set out the parameters of the hearing, additional interested parities were invited to speak during the early evening.

Cuckfield residents, Parish Council representatives and others, including The Cuckfield Society, New England Wood Trust, and Sussex representatives of the Council To Protect Rural England, expressed their concerns about the proposed 1,450-home development.

Main issues raised:

  • How and why The Cuckfield Society is involved

  • Biodiversity

  • Nature and our local landscape

  • Pressure on GP and NHS services

  • Traffic and road congestion

  • School capacity

  • Water, sewage and utility infrastructure

  • Whether "affordable housing" is genuinely affordable for local people

  • How the Stop Cuck-Stye Action Group was formed and carried out the campaign to fight developers Fairfax Aquisitions.
